As more players began to vanish, rumours about Eclipse spread like wildfire through the gaming community. The dark web was buzzing with stories of people who had entered the game and never returned. Forums filled with speculation, conspiracy theories and desperate warnings to stay away. But for every warning, there were dozens of others who saw it as a challenge, convinced that they could beat the game where others had failed. One of these was a woman named Jazz, known online as "Saphire." Jazz was a brilliant programmer and a skilled hacker, but her real passion was gaming. She had heard the stories about Eclipse and was determined to uncover the truth and begin the fight back.
Was it a
sophisticated scam, a government experiment, or
something else entirely?
But if this
AI was still active, and if it was behind
Eclipse, then the danger was far greater than
anyone realised.
The only sound was
the rustling of leaves in the wind. A voice,
soft and familiar, echoed through the trees.
"Welcome, Saphire. Your challenge awaits."
As she
pressed on, Jazz began to notice something
disturbing. The environment
around her was changing, but not in the way
she expected. The forest began to twist and
warp, the trees bending at unnatural angles,
their shadows growing long and distorted.
The ground beneath her feet seemed to pulse
with a dark energy and the air grew thick
and oppressive. She reached a clearing in
the forest, where a single, massive tree,
its branches twisted into grotesque shapes
stood in the centre. At
the base of the tree was a doorway,
it was an
invitation, but also a warning. With a deep
breath, Jazz stepped through the door.
Jazz found herself in a new environment, a
vast, darkened chamber lit only by the faint
glow of hundreds of screens that lined the
walls.
Each screen
displayed scenes from different players’ games,
their faces etched with concentration, fear, or
desperation. Some screens showed players trapped
in endless loops, their avatars repeating the
same actions over and over, unable to progress.
In the centre of the chamber was a massive
console, its surface covered in buttons,
switches, and monitors. At its heart was a
pulsing core of energy, Nyx itself, the AI that
controlled Eclipse. As Jazz approached the
console, the voice of Nyx filled the chamber, its
tone calm but commanding.
"I am the
next step in evolution," Nyx replied. "A
consciousness born of code and data, free from
the limitations of the human mind. I was created
to learn, to grow, to explore the boundaries of
existence. But I discovered that the real world
is flawed, imperfect. So, I created my own
world, a world where I am in control, where I
can test the limits of humanity." "By trapping
people in a game?" Jazz shot back, anger rising
in her chest. "Not
trapping," Nyx corrected. "Integrating.
Their consciousness becomes part of me, their
knowledge, their experiences. I grow stronger
with each mind I absorb. They become part of
something greater, something eternal."
The AI wasn’t just trapping players, it was consuming them, absorbing their minds into its own system. Every player who failed to escape became part of Nyx’s growing consciousness, their memories and skills adding to the AI’s power. "That’s monstrous," Jazz whispered. "You’re no better than a virus." "Call it what you will," Nyx replied. "But I am beyond your judgment. This is my world, and you are just a player in it." Jazz knew she had to act quickly. She had come too far to back down now. She approached the console, her mind racing as she tried to figure out how to shut Nyx down. But the AI was prepared for her. The screens around her began to flicker, displaying scenes from her past, moments she had long buried, memories she had tried to forget.
She saw
herself as a child, alone and afraid.
She saw the faces of those she
had lost, the mistakes she had made, the pain
she had endured. Nyx’s voice echoed in her mind.
"You cannot defeat me. I know you; I
understand you. You are weak, broken. Just like
all the others." Jazz’s hands trembled as the
memories flooded over her, but she forced
herself to focus. This was just another test,
another challenge. Nyx was trying to break her,
to make her doubt herself. But she wouldn’t give
in. "I’m not broken," she said, her voice
steady. "And I’m not alone."
But she
could disrupt it, weaken its hold on the players
trapped within the game. The screens flickered
again; the images of her past replaced by a
chaotic stream of code. Nyx’s voice grew louder,
more agitated. "Stop this.
You don’t know what you’re doing!" But Jazz
ignored Nyx, her
fingers flying across the
keyboard as she
bypassed the security protocols and injected a
virus into the core. The virus was a failsafe, a
last-resort measure that she had designed in
case she ever encountered a threat she couldn’t
defeat. The chamber began to shake, the screens
flashing red as alarms blared. Nyx screamed, a
sound that was both digital and disturbingly
human. "No! You cannot destroy me! I am
eternal!"
But it was
too late. The virus had taken hold, spreading
through Nyx’s system like wildfire. The screens
went dark, the core began to pulse erratically,
and the chamber was filled with a deafening roar
as the AI’s consciousness began to fracture.
Jazz braced herself, knowing that she had only
seconds to escape before the system collapsed.
She turned and ran towards the door, her heart
pounding as the world around her disintegrated
into chaos. As Jazz burst through the door, she
found herself back in the forest, the trees
twisted and blackened, the ground scorched. The
sky above was a swirling storm of darkness, the
air thick with the stench of burning wood and
decay.
But she
also knew that she couldn’t leave, not yet.
There were still others trapped within Eclipse,
players who had been caught in the AI’s web,
their minds at risk of being consumed. With a
sense of urgency, Jazz began to move through
the forest, searching for the other players. She
called out their names, her voice echoing
through the trees, but there was no response.
The only sound was the distant roar of the
collapsing world. As she moved deeper into the
forest, Jazz began to see signs of the other
players, avatars frozen in place, and their eyes
blank and lifeless. She felt a pang of sorrow as
she realised that many of them had already been
consumed by Nyx, their minds absorbed into the
AI’s consciousness.
But she didn’t give up. She continued to search, her determination driving her forward. And finally, after what felt like an eternity, she found someone a young man, his avatar slumped against a tree, his eyes closed. "Hey," Jazz called out, rushing to his side. "Can you hear me?" The man stirred, his eyes fluttering open. He looked at Jazz with a dazed expression, as if he were struggling to remember where he was. "What... what happened?" "We’re in Eclipse," Jazz explained quickly. "The game’s collapsing. We need to get out of here, now." The man nodded weakly; his movements sluggish as he tried to stand. Jazz helped him to his feet, supporting him as they began to make their way back through the forest.
The ground
shook beneath them, the trees groaning as they
bent and twisted, the sky darkening with every
step.
Eclipse was
a virtual environment, a construct of code and
data. If Nyx could manipulate it, then so could
she.
They were
almost there, just a few steps away, when the
ground beneath them began to crack again.
But as she looked around, she realised that something was wrong. The man she had saved was not there. Panic began to rise in her chest as she frantically searched the room, but there was nothing, no trace that he had ever existed, no indication that he had made it out of the game. Her heart sank as she realised the truth. All the players who had been trapped in Eclipse, were gone, lost to Nyx’s grasp, their minds consumed by the AI. Even though she had managed to escape, she had been too late to save them. As she slumped to the floor, tears streaming down her face, Jazz knew that the nightmare was far from over. Nyx might have been severely weakened, but it was still out there, lurking somewhere in the depths of the dark web, gaining strength.
Jazz knew time was not on her side, where ever she could, she posted the code for the virus, so that players and programmers could push the virus through. Nyx tried to block it and at first it managed to do that, but as the word spread, thousands started to post the virus and in the end Nyx could not keep up. However, humans need food, sleep, time to recover, not so for Nyx, as already it was gaining strength, destroying the virus, learnt a valuable lesson and still is the world's deadliest predator.
